I built the resume.
Then I burned down the life.

Four companies. $25M each. Sixteen years of CEO peer groups. A shaman from Peru. Here's what I actually learned about leadership — and why none of it starts in the boardroom.

On paper, I had everything figured out. I built — and sold — four companies, each growing to $25 million in revenue. I chaired CEO peer groups for Vistage for 16 years.

 I mentored other chairs. I spoke to hundreds of CEOs and entrepreneurs about leadership. I became an investment banker, buying, selling, and raising capital for small and mid-size businesses.

The money was real. The reputation was real. The exhaustion was equally real.

I was raising three boys, managing a consulting firm, chairing four CEO groups, flying around the country as a speaker, and working with six to eight clients a year. I told myself I was thriving.

"I thought I was the shit. But I was miserable. I worked all the time — and I had no idea why I couldn't stop."

In 1999, I began a different kind of education. Not an MBA. Not another certification. I went inward.My mother was a Holocaust survivor. That history lives in the body — in the nervous system — and it had been living in mine for decades without my knowing. Through the trauma-informed work of Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) and Gabor Maté, I learned that the stress, grief, and survival patterns driving most driven people aren't psychological problems.

 

They're stored in the body — and that's where they have to unwind.I spent six years working with Tony Robbins as a trainer and coach. And for 15 years, I apprenticed with a shamanic teacher from Peru — learning ceremony, energy awareness, and how to hold space for people moving through genuine transformation.

 

I didn't leave business. I brought all of this into business.

I live in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where once a year I host a leadership retreat unlike anything you've attended. I'm also in the middle of taking two decades of analog, in-person work and putting it all online — a three-year project that's equal parts terrifying and overdue.

Some parts of this site are still being built. I'd rather be honest about that than pretend it's finished. If something doesn't work, tell me. I'm paying attention.
